The best smart garage door openers in 2022

Included in this guide:
Best smart garage door openers

Installing one of the best smart garage door openers is an easy and inexpensive way to make your garage easier to use — and safer too. A smart garage door opener will let you monitor and control your garage door from your smartphone, so you'll get an alert any time someone opens and closes the door.

A smart garage door opener connects to your existing garage door, and then links to your Wi-Fi network so you can monitor it from anywhere. Plus, you can link it to other smart home devices, so if you open it at night, you can set your smart lights to turn on. Or, you can set your smart locks to lock when the door closes.

The best smart garage door openers we recommend here are designed to attach to existing non-smart garage door openers, and cost less than $100. If you're shopping for a new garage door opener, Chamberlain, Genie, Skylink, and Ryobi all make Wi-Fi-connected models ranging in price from $169 to $300, so you don't need to purchase additional accessories to control them from your smartphone.

What are the best smart garage door openers?

After testing and reviewing a number of the top models, we think the best smart garage door opener is the Chamberlain MyQ-G0401. For starters, it typically sells for less than $40, half the price of most of the competition. The MyQ works with Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and IFTTT (among other smart home systems), though it does not work with Alexa. However, it does work with Amazon Key, a free service for Amazon Prime members whereby authorized delivery drivers can open and leave a package inside your garage.

If you're looking for a smart garage door opener that works with Alexa, we suggest the Tailwind iQ3 Garage Door Opener. While its setup was trickier than the Chamberlain, the Tailwind does work with Amazon's virtual assistant, as well as Google Assistant and SmartThings. And, it supports multiple users.

Liftmaster has just introduced several new smart garage door openers that have Chamberlain myQ technology. One model in particular, the Secure View, has a built-in 1080p security camera, a 2000-lumen LED, and battery backup. To save video from the camera, a yearly subscription costs $30 for 7-day backup, or $100 for 30 days of storage. The Liftmaster garage door openers can only be purchased through dealers.

Best smart garage door openers: Chamberlain myQ (G0401) Smart Garage Door Opener review

The best smart garage door opener overall

Specifications

Works With: Wink, Nest, SmartThings, Xfinity Home, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, IFTTT
Wireless: 802.11 Wi-Fi

Reasons to buy

+
Quick setup and easy to use
+
Well-designed mobile app (iOS and Android)
+
Clear, easy to understand directions for set up and help
+
Works with Amazon Key

Reasons to avoid

-
Doesn't work with Alexa
-
Two-factor authentication not on by default

The updated Chamberlain myQ-G0401 smart garage door opener is a more refined version of its predecessor, with a white, rather than black exterior, and a few buttons that let you manually control your garage door. As before, the myQ was extremely easy to set up, and its mobile app (for Android and iOS) was equally intuitive.

The myQ works with a bevy of smart home systems —  Google Assistant, IFTTT, Vivint Smart Home, XFINITY Home, Alpine Audio Connect, Eve for Tesla, Resideo Total Connect and Key by Amazon — but, as before, does not work with Alexa, a curious oversight. If you can overlook that issue, this is the best smart garage door opener around.

best smart garage door openers: Tailwind iQ3 Smart Automatic Garage Door Controller

Uses your car's Bluetooth link to open and close your garage door

Specifications

Works with: Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, IFTTT
Wireless: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth

Reasons to buy

+
Alexa and Google Home integration
+
Can sense when you arrive or leave
+
Customizable features

Reasons to avoid

-
Unintuitive installation
-
Some openers require additional adapter
-
iPhone users need a car sensor

The Tailwind iQ3 smart garage door opener has a unique feature: If you have an Android phone, it can use your car's Bluetooth connection to trigger your garage door to open and close automatically when you arrive or leave home. (iPhone owners have to use a separate dongle). It's clever and works well, but you can't adjust the range at which it activates.

Like many other smart garage door openers, installing the iQ3 wasn't as intuitive as we'd like, but once it was set up, it worked nearly flawlessly. We liked its simple app, notifications, and compatibility with Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, and IFTTT. You can also buy versions that work with one, two, or three garage doors.

Best smart garage door openers: Chamberlain MyQ-G0301

Chamberlain MyQ-G0301  (Image credit: Chamberlain)
Chamberlain's older model, but still effective

Specifications

Works With: Wink, Nest, SmartThings, Xfinity Home, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, IFTTT
Wireless: 802.11 Wi-Fi

Reasons to buy

+
Simple physical setup requirements
+
Simple app interface
+
Can manage multiple devices
+
Works with Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit

Reasons to avoid

-
Doesn't work with Alexa

The Chamberlain MyQ G0301 is the company's older smart garage door opener, but it's still just as effective as the newer model. It includes a sensor for your garage door as well as a hub that connects to your Wi-Fi network. When you send a command using your smartphone, it is relayed to the hub, which then goes to the sensor that activates your garage door. The MyQ app, available for Android and iOS devices, lets you check to see if your door is open, and then close — or open — it remotely. MyQ is also one of the best Google Home compatible devices, meaning you can pair it to Google Assistant and control it with your voice.

MyQ will work with most brands of garage door openers made after 1993 that have standard safety sensors, according to Chamberlain. Currently, MyQ works with Nest, SmartThings and Xfinity Home smart home systems. If you want it to be one of the best HomeKit devices, you need to purchase a $49 adapter. This will let you control your garage doors using Siri, and create scenes so that the lights come on when the door goes up. The one thing it doesn't do, though, is work with Alexa.

Best smart garage door openers: NEXX GARAGE Remote Garage Door Opener

The NEXX GARAGE is the best smart garage door opener for Alexa users. (Image credit: NEXX GARAGE)
The best smart garage door opener for Alexa users

Specifications

Works With: Amazon Alexa, Google Home
Wireless: 2.4GHz 802.11 Wi-Fi

Reasons to buy

+
Simple app and hardware design
+
Can manage multiple users
+
Works with Alexa and Google Assistant

Reasons to avoid

-
Frustrating setup
-
Parts in the box don't match the instruction guide or website

The Nexx Garage is the best smart garage door opener for Alexa users, but it works with Google Home, too, so you can open or close the door using voice commands.  However, setup is a little trickier, as you have to run a wire from your garage door to the garage door opener.

Similar to with GoGogate, Nexx owners can give permission to multiple users, and a calendar in the app lets you see when the door was opened, and by whom. In addition to asking Alexa or Google Assistant to open your door, a feature called Just Drive uses geofencing to detect when you're arriving home, and will automatically open the garage door of you so choose.

Nexx has a list on its site of garage door openers that won't work with its system, though it acknowledges that the list is incomplete. Nexx has a newer model, the NXG-200, which is currently available for $79.99, which we're in the process of reviewing.

Best smart garage door openers: Garadget

Garadget (Image credit: Garadget)
This smart garage door opener uses frickin' lasers, but is trickier to set up.

Specifications

Works With: Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, IFTTT
Wireless: 802.11 (2.4GHz)

Reasons to buy

+
Simple setup
+
Reports real-time open/closed status
+
Customizable alerts

Reasons to avoid

-
App sends incorrect alerts on occasion
-
Elaborate installation

Whereas many smart garage door openers will use a sensor that detects movement to tell if your garage door is open or closed, the Garadget smart garage door opener uses a laser that shines on a reflective tab that you mount to your door. That means there's one less piece of equipment with a battery that can run out, but it also makes setup a bit tricker than other smart garage door openers, as you have to align the laser precisely.

Garagdet's app gives you alerts in real time if your door is opened, or if the door stays open for too long. We did get the occasional false alert, though. Still, we also liked the fact that Garadget works with Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, and IFTTT, so you've no lack of options if you want to connect it with other smart home assistants and devices.

Best smart garage door openers: GarageMate

GarageMate (Image credit: GarageMate)
A simple—perhaps too simple—smart garage door opener

Specifications

Works With: Siri, Google
Wireless: Bluetooth 4.0

Reasons to buy

+
Simple setup
+
Can manage multiple openers and users

Reasons to avoid

-
Doesn't provide open or closed status
-
Doesn't work with other smart-home systems

GarageMate's smart garage door opener is very simple; almost too much so. Unlike the other smart garage door openers we've reviewed, which connect to your Wi-Fi, GarageMate connects to your phone via Bluetooth. This means that you can't check on its status, nor operate it, when you're away from home. That's a bit of a bummer, which is why it's further down our list of the best smart garage door openers.

The GarageMate smart garage door opener also doesn't work with any other smart home systems. However, using your smartphone, you can use Siri or Google Assistant to voice launch the app and automatically open the door. GarageMat's Activity Log lets you monitor who opened your garage for added security, and it works with up to eight users. If you're looking for something simple, cheap, and secure, this is one to consider, but it's not our first choice.

How to choose the best smart garage door opener for you

If you're don't have one already, you can purchase a garage door opener that already has smart home compatibility built in. However, if you have an older garage door opener, you can make it "smart" by purchasing a kit that will let you connect it to the Internet, thereby allowing you to control it remotely using your smartphone.

Will it work with my garage door opener?

Before you buy a smart garage door opener, you should make sure it will work with your existing garage door. Usually, you can find out which doors an opener is compatible with on the manufacturer's site. However, the vast majority of smart garage door openers will work with most garage door openers made after 1993.

How many garage doors do you want to control?

Some smart garage door openers can only control one garage door, while others are able to control two or three garage doors. Be sure to check the product to make sure it will control what you need it to.

Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?

The best smart garage door openers have Wi-Fi, while others use Bluetooth to connect to your phone. We recommend sticking with Wi-Fi models, as they'll allow you to remotely monitor your garage door; Bluetooth models will work only when you're within about 20 feet of the garage.

Smart home compatibility

You also want to find out how many smart home systems each garage door opener is compatible with — the more, the better, because you'll have more options when building out your smart home. For example, our favorite model, the Chamberlain MyQ, does not work with Alexa.

Maybe just buy a new garage door opener

If you're buying a completely new garage door opener, there are many models from Chamberlain and Genie with this technology built in. For example, the Chamberlain B550 ($193) comes with MyQ baked in, so you don't need to purchase a third-party accessory.

How we test smart garage door openers

To determine what's the best smart garage door opener, we install them in a garage on an existing non-smart garage door opener. We look to see how easy it is to physically install the components, and how easily it connects to our home Wi-Fi network.

As with any smart home product, the best smart garage door opener should have an intuitive app that makes it easy to operate, receive notifications, and troubleshoot issues. A good smart garage door opener should also be compatible with the leading virtual assistants (Alexa, Google Assistant, and HomeKit), and be easy to link to them.

And, while most smart garage door openers are pretty close in price, we also factor in how much they cost in determining their final rating.

From what I've been able to discover, Chamberlain has pulled support for SmartThings, and their MyQ openers are no longer compatible with that system. Getting MyQ openers to work with Alexa takes some effort.

From my experience, you cannot use Alexa to open MyQ-equipped garage doors, even with the IFTTT app/link and the Chamberlain subscription. It will only work to close the garage door. From researching this, Chamberlain will apparently not allow door opening without a pin, and their is currently no pin support with IFTTT. If someone knows something I don't know, I'm all ears.

I was an early adopter of the Chamberlain, and was initially disappointed that, while it could pair with IFTTT (free of charge at that time), they refused to let the system be used as a "Then" action, only as "If" triggers...for "safety reasons" (the example given was that closing the door could crush a child, insert eye roll here). I gave up on integrating it with anything other than my security system, which essentially just groups it with my Nest thermostat into a one-stop dashboard on my phone that I almost never use.
When I was setting up my new Google Home Minis, and saw that Chamberlain was available, I got SO EXCITED, and was even more disappointed that they'd gone back on their "safety concerns" BS in favor of trying to swindle users for subscriptions for each. individual. service. Wanna pair with Google Assistant, which would let you voice operate your door? That'll be $10/year (at the discounted bulk rate). Double that if you also want to pair it with IFTTT. I'd love to find the person responsible for this and punch them in the throat, twice a month. But I'll do it at a discounted rate so they only get 20 punches per year instead of 24. Jerks.

Before you purchase a smart garage door controller, check out the Tailwind iQ3 at gotailwind.com. The Tailwind iQ3 Smart Automatic Garage Door Controller used with the Tailwind Smart app (iPhone & Android) is the most feature rich and secure garage door controller available today. The Tailwind iQ3 is easy to install and can open, close, and monitor up to three garage doors. It works with Alexa, Google Home and IFTTT. Tailwind iQ3 senses you coming and automatically opens the correct garage door. It also has a night mode to make sure your door is closed. Go to gotailwind.com and see for yourself. I know first hand because I purchased one and use it every day. It is really cool to watch my garage door open automatically as I pull into my driveway.

When will garage doors with HomeKit built in be released? Have 3 garage doors aging and would be more beneficial to just replace whole unit then to buy these adding, plus a cleaner setup

Your December 2019 version of this article notes that Best Buy Insignia model has had its smart functionality discontinued. Is this a risk with all brands? Will they cease to operate if the company folds or if they decide to discontinue the product? Will the products loose all functionality or just some? Isn't this information that is worth knowing? Shouldn't it have been mentioned?

It's a potential issue with any connected device—even Amazon and Google—so it's a risk you take when purchasing any smart home product.

Your March 3rd(?) 2020 update to this article states that one no longer needs to register a subscription in order for the Chamberlain MYQ-G0301 to function with Google. Is that the paid subscription ($1/MO / $10/yr) fee that they are describing?

I've also found it a bit confusing about the "it works with Google Assistant, but not Google Home" comments I've read in various product reviews. Can you shed some light on these issues for clarity? Much appreciated!
